Ambassador and Madame Hayashi’s visit to Manchester

On 18 November 2022, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime, together with Madame Hayashi, visited Manchester, where he met and exchanged views with several prominent figures including Mr Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Professor Luke Georghiou, Deputy President of the University of Manchester. They also visited the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, University of Manchester. Afterwards, they attended the Manchester Consular Association’s annual Gala Dinner.
Meeting with Mr Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester
Ambassador Hayashi had a meeting with Mr Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester. They had a wide-ranging discussion on the Japan-Manchester relationship, including the promotion of business ties. Ms Jo Ahmed, Honorary Consul of Japan in Manchester, and Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, also joined the meeting.
Meeting with Professor Georghiou, Deputy President of the University of Manchester
Ambassador and Madame Hayashi had a meeting with Professor Georghiou, Deputy President, and other senior academics of the University of Manchester. They exchanged views on Japanese Studies in the university as well as collaboration in natural sciences with Japanese universities.
Visit to the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, Manchester University
Ambassador and Madame Hayashi visited the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, Manchester University, where they enjoyed viewing the Japan-related collections, such as Gokaiko Yokohama Zenzu (Complete Picture of the Newly Opened Port of Yokohama), which were collected in the 19th century.
Attendance at the annual Gala Dinner organised by the Manchester Consular Association
Ambassador and Madame Hayashi attended the annual Gala Dinner hosted by the Manchester Consular Association, where he delivered a speech. In his remarks, he congratulated Ms Jo Ahmed, Honorary Consul of Japan, on her inauguration as the President of the Association. He then expressed his wish to see the promotion of relations between Japan and Manchester, one of the hubs for the UK in the political, economic and cultural arenas, as well as the further enhancement of the international appeal of the region. The dinner was held at Manchester Art Gallery and was attended by civic leaders and regional Lord Mayors as well as consuls and honorary consuls in the city, together with representatives from Embassies and local businesses.
