Ambassador’s Commendation - Dr Robin Wilson, Director of Oxford University Japanese Kiln
2023/2/28
On 28 February 2023, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime awarded the Ambassador’s Commendation to Dr Robin Wilson, Director of Oxford University Japanese Kilns.
Since 2015, Dr Wilson, an anthropologist, has been promoting cultural exchange between the UK and Japan through the Oxford University Anagama Project. This initiative involved the construction of traditional Japanese kilns in Wytham Woods, an area of land owned by the University of Oxford, and has contributed to deepening cultural understanding between the UK and Japan through ceramics. (See the recent exhibition co-organised by the Embassy.)
At the ceremony, Ambassador Hayashi said the venture had led to the further promotion and development of ceramic culture in the UK by providing a forum for people from all walks of life to experience pottery creation through the use of a traditional Japanese Anagama kiln. He paid tribute to Dr Wilson and the members of the project, including Oxford University, for the project’s great contribution to enhancing UK-Japan cultural relations.
Dr Wilson said he was honoured to receive the commendation and expressed his wish to continue with this endeavour to share the beauty of pottery through Anagama kilns.
