2023/3/27
On 27 March, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime deposited Japan’s instrument of accession to the Cape Town Agreement of 2012 on the Implementation of the Provisions of the Torremolinos Protocol of 1993 relating to the Torremolinos International Convention for the Safety of Fishing Vessels, 1977, with Mr Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at the IMO headquarters in London, on behalf of the Government of Japan. In depositing the instrument of accession, Ambassador Hayashi expressed Japan’s expectation towards the early entry into force of the Cape Town Agreement. Secretary-General Lim welcomed Japan's accession as an important step towards the entry into force of the Cape Town Agreement.
This Agreement, for the establishment of international regulations for the safety of fishing vessels, mainly provides for the modification and implementation of the provisions of the Torremolinos Protocol of 1993 relating to the Torremolinos International Convention for the Safety of Fishing Vessels, 1977, which has not yet entered into force.
The accession by Japan to this Agreement not only contributes to improving the safety of fishing vessels in Japan and other countries but is also significant in terms of the promotion of international cooperation in this field.
