On 24 April 2023, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime attended the Institute of Directors Japan-UK Symposium at Japan House London, an event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Iwakura Mission, and gave a keynote speech.

The symposium was opened with a welcome address by Mr Jonathan Geldart, Director General of the Institute of Directors, and a chief guest speech by The Rt Hon Nigel Huddleston MP, Minister of State for International Trade. This was followed by a keynote speech by Ambassador Hayashi, and addresses by The Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, Trade Envoy to Japan, The Rt Hon Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP, Minister of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and other guests.

In his keynote speech, Ambassador Hayashi talked of how the Iwakura Mission spent about 4 months in the UK, one of 12 countries it visited 150 years ago, during which time they visited all parts of the UK from urban to rural areas, covering all areas of politics, military, business, industry, education, science and the arts. He also explained how what they learned during their stay played an important role in the modernisation of Japan during the Meiji Restoration, and laid the foundations for the close relationship between Japan and the UK that continues today.
