On 9 May, Ambassador Hayashi attended the Kyoto Prize at Oxford, held at the Weston Library, part of the Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford. The Kyoto Prize was founded by the Inamori Foundation in 1985, and the Kyoto Prize at Oxford was launched in 2017, at which lectures and panel discussions are held by the previous year's laureates.

This year, Professor Bryan Thomas Grenfell, 2022 laureate of Basic Sciences, and Mr. Zakir Hussain, 2022 laureate of Arts and Philosophy presented a hybrid-style panel discussion with Professor Carver Mead, 2022 laureate of Advanced Technology, attending online. The panel discussion was followed by a dinner attended by nearly 100 members from the Inamori Foundation and the University of Oxford.

At the dinner, following opening remarks by Professor Ngaire Tui Woods, Dean of the Blavatnik School of Government, and Professor Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Ambassador Hayashi talked of the values of contributing to a better society that were shared between the University of Oxford and Dr Inamori Kazuo, who sadly passed away last year. He also expressed his hope that the University of Oxford would continue to build an excellent relationship with the Japanese academic community through the events of the Kyoto Prize at Oxford.
