Ambassador’s Commendation - Dr Helen Macnaughtan

On Tuesday 16 May, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime awarded the Ambassador’s Commendation to Dr Helen Macnaughtan, Senior Lecturer at SOAS University of London.
Dr Macnaughtan has spent many years researching gender and sporting issues in Japan and has contributed to developing awareness of Japan’s economy and society in the UK. In recent years, she has developed her research particularly focusing on the role of sport in Japan. In 2015 she became the first female Chair of the Japan Research Centre, a position which she held until 2021, and dedicated herself to strengthening Japanese Studies at SOAS. The award ceremony was held on the occasion of the last lecture of her Sports Symposia Series, and was celebrated by a large number of participants, including researchers on Japan as well as representatives of institutions involved in sports.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Hayashi praised Dr Macnaughtan on her promotion of understandings on Japan in the UK focusing on gender and sports aspects, and paid tributeto her great achievements.
Dr Macnaughtan said she was honoured to receive the commendation and expressed her wish to continue contributing to the friendship between Japan and the UK.
