On 22 September, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime attended an event to celebrate the opening of Toshiba Europe’s new Quantum Technology Centre in Cambridge.

Ambassador Hayashi enjoyed a tour of the centre’s facilities with Mr SHIMADA Taro, President and Chief Executive Officer of Toshiba, and Lord Dominic Johnson, Minister of State in the Department for Business and Trade. He was briefed on quantum cryptography technology, a cutting-edge method of encryption which enables safe and secure communications.

In his congratulatory speech, Ambassador Hayashi noted the increasing importance of quantum cryptography as we approach a future where quantum computers replace the current models. He also highlighted the opening of the centre as another significant example of growing Japan-UK cooperation in the field of digitalisation, as promoted by the Hiroshima Accord and the UK-Japan Digital Partnership, and its broader significance in terms of further strengthening the partnership between our two countries.
