Japanese British Lawyers’ Networking Reception 2023

On 12 October, Ambassador and Madame Hayashi co-hosted the Japanese British Lawyers’ Networking Reception 2023 alongside the British Japanese Law Association (BJLA). The Japanese British Lawyers’ Networking Reception was held to promote mutual understanding and interaction between Japanese and British lawyers and this event marked the fifth anniversary of this initiative.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Hayashi referred to the state of the relationship between Japan and the UK as the “best ever”. He then mentioned recent achievements in the legal and judicial field such as the G7 Justice Ministers’ meeting and the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on legal matters signed between the two countries. Ambassador Hayashi conveyed his gratitude for each participant’s cooperative contributions and expressed his wish that the ties between Japan and the UK in this field would continue to develop further.
The Rt Hon The Lord Robert Reed of Allermuir, President of the Supreme Court of the UK, referred to the good relationship between Japan and the UK and touched upon recent achievements, such as the signing of the MOC. He also spoke of his gratitude to those who have contributed towards the relationship and future cooperation in the legal field.
Around 140 participants joined this reception, with guests comprising the President of the Supreme Court of the UK and other judges, alongside prosecutors, lawyers, members of the Parliament, senior officials of the UK Government and academics alongside Japanese judges, prosecutors and lawyers who reside or are staying in the UK. This year Justice of the Supreme Court of Japan, Mr Nagamine Yasumasa, joined first time for this reception.
