Conclusion of Bilateral Field Exercise, Vigilant Isles 23, by Japan Ground Self Defense Force and the British Army
2023/11/26

On 26 November, the Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) and the British Army successfully completed the bilateral field exercise, Vigilant Isles 23 (VI23), which had been taking place since 15 November. The bilateral forces conducted multiple training exercises such as infiltration and reconnaissance, combat shooting, and joint terminal attack control to develop their tactical skills and deepen their mutual understanding.
This exercise was the first time that the Japan-UK Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) was applied. Around 400 JGSDF personnel and around 200 British Army soldiers participated, which is the largest number of participants ever.
Japan-UK security and defence cooperation is becoming increasingly important. It contributes to not only improving the security of Japan, but also the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region and the international community, as well as supporting international cooperation in addressing global challenges.
