Update from JICC and Ambassador's activities

November has been a busy month for Japanese cultural-related events. Japan House London recently opened their new exhibition “Ainu Stories: Contemporary Lives by the Saru River” and Ambassador and Madame Hayashi attended the private viewing and opening event. The exhibition focuses on Ainu culture, language, cuisine and tourism, with costumes, craftworks and others on display, as well as dance, cooking and other demonstrations and workshops to be held during the exhibition period. In Oxford, at the Ashmolean Museum. an exhibition showcasing the exquisite kabuki costumes of Bando Tamasaburo V has also opened and will run until December 2024. A special opening event was also held at Japan House London, which included a performance of kabuki music by professional kabuki musicians, including Tanaka Denjirō VII, followed by a talk on the music, instruments, and costumes of kabuki theatre. Manga Jiman Competition 2023

The Embassy is still looking for comic creators to enter this year's Manga Jiman Competition! Now in its 17th year, the competition has two different formats with three different categories;
■Yonkoma
Yonkoma manga is a story told within four panels set out on a single page.
Those aged 11, 12 or 13 by the start of 2024 can enter the Yonkoma Youth category
Anyone aged 14 or over will be judged separately in the Yonkoma Manga 14+ category
■Manga Jiman
A short story told across 6 to 8 pages for anyone aged 14 or over
This year's theme is FORWARD. Winners of the competition will receive fantastic prizes from original manga and animation cells, to cameras and Japanese snacks and gifts! The winning entries will be displayed at the Embassy of Japan in London in early 2024. The deadline for entries is Monday 8 January, 5pm (GMT).
