On 3 July, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime attended a cultural exchange event bringing together Motomiya City and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, held in the Fukushima Garden in Holland Park. In his speech, Ambassador Hayashi congratulated the two municipalities on their longstanding exchange and expressed his hope that the State Visit of Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress to the UK would have provided an opportunity for further broadening the scope of exchange.

Exchanges between Motomiya City, Fukushima Prefecture and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea began after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, leading to a visit by His Royal Highness Prince William the Duke of Cambridge to Smile Kids Park in Motomiya City in 2015. Exchanges between them have continued, including through a sister garden relationship between the City’s English Garden and the Borough’s Fukushima Garden.

At the event, participants were treated to a variety of Japanese cultural activities, including Nodate (outdoor tea ceremony) and Ikebana (flower arrangement).
