On Friday 15 March 2024, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime presented the Foreign Minister’s Commendation to Dr Philip King at a ceremony held at the Ambassador's residence. Dr King has been responsible for the operation of the RIKEN-RAL Muon Experimental Facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK since 2012, and has contributed to the promotion of science and technology cooperation between the UK and Japan as its Director for over 10 years.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Hayashi congratulated Dr King on being awarded the Foreign Minister's Commendation, praising his wide range of achievements promoting science and technology collaboration between Japan and the UK. This has included welcoming many scientists to conduct joint research using the muon experimental facility and establishing cooperation in muon science with a number of Southeast Asian countries, including the training and nurturing of young researchers.

In response, Dr King emphasised the importance of research cooperation through the use of large research facilities in Japan and the UK, and the ongoing exchange of personnel between the two countries in the field of muon research. He also expressed his gratitude to his family and researchers at ISIS and RIKEN.
