On 8th April 2024, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime attended the 7th Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum European Workshop.

The STS Forum held its first meeting in Brussels in May 2016 as a Political, Industry and Academic Leaders' High-Level Meeting. It facilitates a wide range of science and technology-related discussions with participants from academia, industry and other stakeholders from Japan and the European region. The 7th STS Forum European Workshop was co-organised by the STS Forum, a non-profit organisation, the Royal Society, and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

In his remarks, Ambassador Hayashi highlighted the importance of the STS Forum in bringing together a wide range of esteemed participants to discuss “strengthening the lights and controlling the shadows” of science and technology from a long-term perspective for the benefit of the future of humanity, not as representatives of their organisations or nations but as concerned and independent individuals. The STS Forum’s greatest asset is its human network, he said, which goes beyond academic disciplines and national boundaries. He also emphasised the importance of the theme of the workshop, “Science and Technology for Future Global Resilience”, and expressed the hope that the participants would address the topic in a comprehensive and wide-ranging manner during their discussions.
