On 23 April, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime attended the Roundtable meeting with Ambassadors from Asia organised by the British Group Inter-Parliamentary Union (BGIPU). The event was attended by 16 cross-party members of the UK Parliament from both Houses.

At the meeting, Ambassador Hayashi emphasised that the Japan-UK partnership has never been better, and we have deepened the partnership on various areas, including security, defence, and the economy. This was demonstrated by the announcement of the Hiroshima Accord: An Enhanced Japan-UK Global Strategic Partnership, as well as the signing of the Japan-UK Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), the Convention on the establishment of the GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO) involving Japan, the UK and Italy, and the Protocol on the Accession of the UK to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Ambassador Hayashi also explained Japan’s position on a range of issues facing both the Indo-Pacific region and international community.

In a Q&A session afterwards, Ambassador Hayashi exchanged views on the situation in the Indo-Pacific including the South China Sea, the situation in Ukraine and the Middle-East, international school partnerships, and measures to reduce marine plastic waste.
