On 9 May, Ambassador Hayashi attended an event at the University of Reading to celebrate the bestowal of the 2024 Japan Prize on Professor Sir Brian Hoskins.
The Japan Prize is conferred upon scientists and engineers from around the world who have made original and groundbreaking achievements in their fields, which contribute significantly to realising peace and prosperity for all humanity. Professor Hoskins (UK), together with Professor John Wallace (USA), was awarded the 2024 Japan Prize for his work towards the establishment of a scientific foundation for understanding and predicting extreme weather events.
In his speech Ambassador Hayashi offered his sincere congratulations to Professor Hoskins, noting that extreme weather events such as typhoons, floods and severe heatwaves are a global challenge to which Japan is by no means immune. He highlighted the importance of international collaboration in safeguarding against such events, and expressed his delight at the announcement that Professor Hoskins would be donating his prize money to a new fund to enable young Japanese researchers to visit the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading.
