On 21 May, Ambassador and Madame Hayashi attended the awards ceremony for the Britain in Bloom Gold Community Awards, the UK's national horticultural competition, held in the Britain in Bloom 60th Anniversary Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Their presence reflected the fact that there were three recipients of the award in Japan this year, marking the first time the award has been presented outside the UK.

In addition to Ambassador and Madame Hayashi, the ceremony was attended by Dr Tim Upson, Director, and Jon Wheatley, Vice Chairman of the RHS, Mr Inada Ryo, Mayor of Mitsuke City, Niigata Prefecture, and Ms Kay Yamada of Barakura English Garden, representing two of the recipients.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Ambassador Hayashi congratulated the winners and spoke of the long-standing relationship between Japan and the UK through gardens and gardening as well as the strong commitment to living in harmony with nature, flowers and plants evident in both countries. He expressed his hope that gardens and gardening would continue to be a source of relaxation for many people and to serve as a bridge of friendship between our two peoples.

Note: The Chelsea Flower Show brings together world-renowned garden designers, plant experts, florists and others each year to showcase cutting-edge garden design and beautiful flowers. This year's show runs from 21-25 May.
