On 4 July, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime awarded the Ambassador’s Commendation to Professor Geraldine Thomas OBE, former Professor at Imperial College London and former Director of the Chernobyl Tissue Bank.

Professor Thomas has made a significant expert contribution over the years to helping people understand the real risks of radiation exposure following the accident at the TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. She visited Fukushima several times and actively engaged in communication with local residents to ensure that they correctly understood the risks of radiation exposure and the need for thyroid screening tests.

In his remarks, Ambassador Hayashi appreciated Professor Thomas for her contribution and praised her clear communication with the public, based on scientific research, which had proved invaluable to Japan and had helped to improve international understanding of the issue.
