Japanese Government honours Dr Richard Jones Hatchett

On 4 October 2024, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime bestowed upon Dr Richard Jones Hatchett The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon at a ceremony held at the Ambassador's residence.
As the CEO of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Dr Hatchett led the early funding efforts for vaccine development at the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, significantly contributing to the global fight against COVID-19, including in Japan. Additionally, CEPI signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) with Japan’s Advanced Research and Development Strategy Center (SCARDA) under the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). This was aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two institutions, primarily through the sharing of information, and has contributed to strengthening Japan’s vaccine development capabilities.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Hayashi praised Dr Hatchett for his achievements, noting that Dr Hatchett and CEPI will continue to play a leading role in safeguarding global health and driving necessary innovation. He also praised Dr Hatchett for his cooperation with Japan in the field of global health, and for his contributions to the advancement of Japan’s global health policies.
In response, Dr Hatchett stated that Japan has been a leader in global health for many years and is one of CEPI's largest investors, and he expressed his gratitude for the collaboration with various Japanese experts and institutions.
