On 15 October, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime hosted a reception at the Embassy of Japan in the UK to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Japan-UK Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Hayashi talked of how the agreement had led to cooperation between Japan and the UK across many research fields and in promoting human resource development, and how it had contributed to the sharing of scientific knowledge and tackling global challenges beyond the bilateral relationship. He also mentioned the meeting of the UK-Japan Joint Committee on Science and Technology held last year, which agreed to promote cooperation in emerging technologies such as AI, quantum physics and engineering biology. Ambassador Hayashi also looked back on the recent State Visit by Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan to the UK, when both His Majesty the Emperor and His Majesty King Charles III highlighted the progress of personnel exchange in science and technology between Japan and the UK while emphasising the importance of further strengthening UK-Japan cooperation in this field.

Lord Vallance, Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, remarked how Japanese and British scientists had been at the forefront of scientific progress, with collaboration across the full spectrum of scientific research. He also praised the presence of Japanese R&D centres in the UK, alongside a growing number of exciting British startups setting up offices in Japan, and noted the significant outputs achieved when Japanese and UK researchers and businesses collaborated. Looking ahead, Lord Vallance highlighted the opportunity to further deepen Japan-UK collaboration across the technologies of tomorrow, including quantum and semiconductors, that would transform the lives of our people in the 30 years to come.

The reception was attended by approximately 150 people, including Professor Yoichiro Matsumoto, Science and Technology Advisor to the Foreign Minister, who was visiting the UK, Lord Waldegrave, who had signed the agreement as UK Science Minister in 1994, and Professor Dame Angela McLean, Chief Science Advisor to the Government. Among the other participants were representatives of the British Government, researchers from British universities and national institutes, which included Nobel Prize laureates, and industry groups, Japanese researchers active in the UK and members of the media.
