On 4 March, the Embassy of Japan in the UK co-hosted the Japan-UK Fusion Symposium and Reception “Prospects for Fusion Energy and how Japan and the UK can drive a new global sector” together with Japan Fusion Energy Industry Council (J-Fusion).

In his opening remarks at the reception, Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki, noted how science and technology cooperation plays an important role in the partnership between the two countries. He also remarked on how fusion energy has the potential to transform our approach to net zero, and how international partnerships, including those between Japan and the UK, are essential to realising this potential.

Ms Kerry McCarthy MP, Minister for Climate in the Department of Energy, Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), expressed her determination to take the UK to the next stage in fusion, involving government and industry and working with partners like Japan, to make the UK a global hub for fusion energy investment.

The symposium and reception were organised to demonstrate the progress being made in Japan-UK cooperation in the field of fusion energy under the Japan-UK Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement and other agreements. At the symposium, fusion experts from the public and private sectors of both countries engaged in a lively exchange of views on how Japan and the UK can lead a new global sector, while the reception welcomed nearly 100 participants, including UK government officials, Chairman of the Fusion Energy APPG Mr James Naish MP, the UK Atomic Energy Authority, fusion energy-related companies and start-ups in the UK and Japan, as well as academics and investors.
