On 28 April, Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki attended the opening of the exhibition "Hiroshige: The Artist and the Open Road" at the British Museum. The exhibition will be open to the public from 1 May.
In his remarks, Ambassador Suzuki spoke about Hiroshige, one of Japan’s most renowned ukiyo-e artists. He noted that Hiroshige’s distinctive style, charactarised by the bold use of perspective and vivid colors exemplified by the so-called “Hiroshige blue”, had an influence on Western art through Japonisme, while also pointing out that some of these stylistic elements have roots in European traditions. He expressed his hope that many visitors will enjoy the East-West cultural exchange embodied in Hiroshige’s art.
