On 27 May, the Embassy of Japan in the UK hosted a seminar and reception to celebrate the opening of Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Several presentations and a panel discussion were held to share updates on Expo-related activities, followed by two artists’ performances.

During the first half of the event, UK government officials, representatives from the Scottish parliament, the Senedd, the city of Manchester and business organisations gave presentations about Expo 2025 and took part in panel discussions. Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki opened the reception with a speech. The official character mascot for Expo 2025, “MyakuMyaku”, also joined the event to celebrate the UK’s participation in the Expo. This was followed by a Wadaiko performance by a traditional Japanese drummer, Taiko-ist Takuya, and an anime-fusion rap performance by Shao Dow, who had performed at the UK National Day at the Expo.

Around 150 guests attended, including government officials as well as Japanese and British industry leaders, and representatives from business and media organisations. This provided a valuable opportunity to promote not only Japan-UK business cooperation, but also cultural exchange and the chance to build personal networks.

In his speech, Ambassador Suzuki expressed his appreciation for the attendance at the Expo of UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, and noted the UK government’s newly-launched “Musubi” initiative, which had been created to help consolidate the Expo’s legacy and support Japan-UK exchange for years to come. The Embassy will also promote people-to-people connections based on this brand-new initiative to build bridges between Japan and the UK across various sectors.
