‘Wales and Japan 2025’ Mid-Year Reception

On 11 June, the Embassy of Japan in the UK and the Welsh Government co-hosted the ‘Wales and Japan 2025’ Mid-Year Reception at the Embassy. On behalf of the Welsh Government, the Rt Hon Eluned Morgan MS, First Minister of Wales attended as co-host. The Welsh Government has designated this year as ‘Wales and Japan 2025’ to promote new economic and cultural partnerships between Japan and Wales. Over the past six months, a variety of Japan-Wales events have been carried out, including the Wales Day at the Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai. During the reception, the Welsh Government presented an interim report on ‘Wales and Japan 2025,’ followed by a business panel discussion between representatives from Japanese companies based in Wales and the Welsh Government, as well as a performance by ‘Only Boys Aloud’, a well-known boys’ choir in Wales. The reception was attended by 170 participants, including representatives from the Welsh Government, Japanese companies based both in Wales and London, Welsh companies, and those who are involved in the Japanese-UK cultural relations, providing a meaningful opportunity for networking and exchange between Japan and Wales.

In her opening remarks, First Minister Morgan welcomed the deepening of relations between Japan and Wales in various fields and touched upon the Welsh Government's efforts over the past six months for ‘Wales and Japan 2025,’ including the first Wales Day at the Expo 2025 in Osaka, which was joined by Ms Rebecca Evans MS, Minister for Economy, Energy and Planning. She also announced the dispatch of Wales’ largest trade mission to Japan for the second Wales Day at Expo 2025 on 24 June.

Ambassador Suzuki accordingly welcomed these Welsh Government initiatives and announced that three rugby test matches between Japan and Wales will also be scheduled this year. He stated that the Embassy continues to commit to the successful conclusion of ‘Wales and Japan 2025’.
