Japanese Government honours Mr Stephen John Pitts

On 25 July, Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki bestowed The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette upon Mr Stephen John Pitts at a ceremony held at the Ambassador’s residence.

Mr Pitts has been a leading figure in the field of probation through his dedicated service at probation offices in the UK, Ministry of Justice and the Confederation of European Probation. He has also continuously participated, as a visiting expert, in training programmes at the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI), which is operated by the Japanese Ministry of Justice. His assistance was indispensable to the successful convening of the 3rd session of the World Congress on Probation held in Japan. Furthermore, he devoted considerable expertise and effort toward both the organisation and subsequent follow-up of the 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (Kyoto Congress) held in Japan in 2021.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Suzuki highlighted the many achievements of Mr Pitts’ and expressed his respect and gratitude for his invaluable contributions to the advancement of probation systems and the strengthening of Japan-UK relations.

In response, Mr Pitts reflected on his career and expressed deep appreciation to the many individuals whose support made his work possible.
