On 30 July, the Embassy of Japan in the UK co-hosted an event with EY on Japan-UK third-country partnerships in Africa. The Embassy has commissioned EY to conduct research into African economies, UK-Africa economic relations and potential areas of cooperation between Japanese and British companies. The event aimed to explain the key findings of the survey to Japanese business, increase interest in African business among Japanese companies, and promote cooperation between Japanese and British companies in Africa.

The event featured panelists including Mr Chris Chijiutomi, Managing Director and Head of Africa, British International Investment (BII); Mr Michael Yip, International Infrastructure Partnerships and Finance Lead, Department of Business and Trade (DBT); Mr Tetsuya Harada, Chief Representative for Europe and Head of JICA France Office; and Ms Maiko Fujio, Senior Representative, JBIC Representative Office in London. The speakers covered a wide range of issues, including African projects, potential areas for cooperation, challenges in African business, and support for Japanese and UK companies doing business in Africa.

EY then presented the key findings from their survey results, looking at (i) trends in African economies, and (ii) trade and investment trends, economic policies and market attractiveness and risks in South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria, and the trade and investment relations between the UK and each of these countries.
