On 4 March, Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki attended the 15th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony for the Great East Japan Earthquake, held at Fukushima Garden in Holland Park and organised by the Fukushima Prefectural Association.

Participants included Councillor Tom Bennett, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea; Councillor Robert Freeman; Councillor Preety Hudd; Lady Elizabeth Arnold, former Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London; Victoria Borwick, former Member of Parliament; Ms Ayako Kato, President of the Fukushima Prefectural Association in London; as well as other representatives connected with Fukushima and members of the UK government.

In his remarks, Ambassador Suzuki expressed his deep gratitude for the warm support extended by the UK in the aftermath of the disaster, and emphasised that Fukushima Garden continues to stand as a symbol of the enduring ties between Japan and the UK, as well as the shared hopes for Fukushima’s revitalisation. He also paid tribute to the late Mr Yoshio Mitsuyama, whose dedication was instrumental in establishing Fukushima Garden and advancing support for Fukushima’s reconstruction, and expressed his hope that the friendship between Japan and the UK will continue to flourish.

Note: Fukushima Garden was opened in 2012 with the cooperation of the Fukushima Prefectural Association in London and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in gratitude for the support extended by the UK following the Great East Japan Earthquake. At this year’s ceremony, a cherry blossom tree was planted in memory of the first anniversary of the passing of Mr Yoshio Mitsuyama, former President of the Fukushima Prefectural Association in London.
