UCL-Japan Youth Challenge 2026 Reception

On 31 July, the Embassy of Japan hosted the UCL-Japan Youth Challenge 2026 reception at the Embassy.
In his opening remarks, Minister Maeda noted that University College London (UCL) accepted students from Yamaguchi and Kagoshima Prefecture (formerly the Choshu and Satsuma domains) 160 years ago and produced figures who later led Japan’s modernisation, including Ito Hirobumi, Japan’s first Prime Minister. He also expressed his hope that the Japanese and British high school students taking part in this programme will go on to serve as bridges between Japan and the UK.
The reception was also attended by Takuma Miyaji, Member of the House of Representatives from Kagoshima Prefecture, and Masahiro Takamura, Member of the House of Representatives from Yamaguchi Prefecture.
UCL-Japan Youth Challenge
The UCL-Japan Youth Challenge is an annual summer school programme for pre-university students from UK sixth form colleges and Japanese high schools for cultural interaction through various educational activities and events held at UCL (University College London) and the University of Cambridge.
