Ambassador Suzuki’s attendance at Hendon Japanese Cemetery’s 90th Anniversary Ceremony and Memorial Service

On 23 August, Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki attended a ceremony and memorial service marking the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Hendon Japanese Cemetery. The event was hosted by the Japan Association in the UK and was attended by many of its members, Japanese residents in the UK and local dignitaries including Councillor Gurung of the London Borough of Barnet.
In his remarks, Ambassador Suzuki noted that the strong relationship between Japan and the UK today has been built upon the dedicated effort and enduring hardships of pioneers, including those who rest in the cemetery. He also expressed his heartfelt respect and gratitude for the longstanding dedication of the Japan Association in the UK, whose continued commitment has ensured that the cemetery has been maintained in beautiful condition to this day.
The ceremony and memorial service were conducted with great solemnity and care, featuring Buddhist sutras chanted by the Reverend Kenshin Ishii of Three Wheels Temple. A sakura cherry tree was also planted by the Sakura Cherry Tree Project to mark the occasion.
