Foreign Minister's Commendation – Ms Jane Hasell-McCosh

2019/12/17
On 9 December 2019, Ambassador Yasumasa Nagamine awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendation to Ms Jane Hasell-McCosh, founder of the World’s Original Marmalade Awards, for her contributions to friendly relations between Japan and the UK.

Jane is the lady of Dalemain, the centre of the world for marmalade thanks to her efforts. She founded the World’s Original Marmalade Awards & Festival in 2005 to celebrate marmalade as well as to revitalize her local area and contribute to charity. Since then it has expanded with entries from all over the world including Japan. Now there have been many Japanese entrants to the contest, including winners of the illustrious Double Gold Award.

Thanks to Jane’s efforts, this year saw the first ever marmalade festival in Japan, which was held under the umbrella of the Dalemain World Marmalade Awards & Festival. Yawatahama city of Ehime Prefecture, which is a famous area within Japan for citrus fruit production, hosted the event. It drew hundreds of entries from marmalade makers in Japan, the UK and other nations, and was a celebration of both British and Japanese marmalade. Jane’s passion has helped to not only reinvigorate the local areas surrounding Dalemain, but also quieter regional areas of Japan through this lively and large scale event.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Nagamine congratulated Jane on her much deserved Foreign Minister’s Commendation and expressed his belief that the network of people who came together through their love of marmalade will expand and that through this network all kinds of exchange in diverse fields will blossom. During her speech, Jane conveyed her honour of receiving the award and her thanks to the many guests for their support.
