Lost and Revived: 19th century Japanese culture and the Kanda Festival

In this lecture, leading expert on 19th-century Japanese culture, Professor Naoyuki Kinoshita of the University of Tokyo will explore the context of some of the lost aspects of Japanese traditional culture, taking as an example the unique Kanda Myojin Festival in Tokyo and its ��living history��.


In addition to looking at the festival's links to the modern day, this special lecture by Prof. Kinoshita will give the opportunity to reflect that seemingly outdated culture can still be relevant to our lives.

Dr Ayako Hotta-Lister has taught and performed in Japan, Britain and Hong Kong. She will introduce the ��koto�� and give a brief history with illustrations. There will be demonstrations on both traditional and contemporary koto composition and the art of singing. Members of the audience will also be invited to play the koto with her.
