National Flag and Anthem: The national flag of Japan is known as the hinomaru, a red disc that symbolises the sun in the centre of a white field.
The words of the Japanese anthem kimigayo are based on a waka poem written more than 1000 years ago. It expresses the desire for national prosperity and eternal peace.

The Japanese archipelago stretches for some 3,000 kilometres on a roughly north-south axis and the climate differs from region to region - subarctic zone climate in the northern region, temperate zone climate in the central and subtropical zone climate in the southern region.
