Manga Jiman Competition 2019 Results
2020/2/20
On Friday 14 February, the shortlisted artists, judges and manga creators from across the UK and beyond gathered in the Embassy of Japan to hear the results from the 13th edition of the Manga Jiman competition. In a year which saw seven first time entrants make the short list, there was tangible anticipation in the room as the results were revealed. We are pleased to share the full list of winners here.
First prize, two flights to Japan courtesy of All Nippon Airways, was taken by Tori Jones, for her entry A Heart of Gold or Some Other Metal. The judges praised her lucid art style and thoughtfulness in her interpretation of the theme of union in her work, in what was deemed a very successful story overall.
In second place, winning a PFU Fujitsu A3 scanner was Alexandra Cook, with her entry Kiyomi's Prequel. An unusual love story full of trickery and twists, it impressed the judges with its atypical take on the subject of love and Gods. In third place was Mina Ghosh with her entry The Last Day of Uther Adriss. A physical union, and reunion, that is as unlikely as it is intriguing is at the centre of a story that impressed the judges. All three of the top prize winners to this year’s contest were first time entrants, and all are exceptional manga creating talent to be followed closely in the future.
Year on year the judges praise the quality of the shortlisted entries, and indeed all of the entries that the competition recieves. Seeking to encourage a broad range of artistic and storytelling styles, the competition would not be possible without the ongoing support of the artists, and we would like to take this opporunity to thank all of those who take part. The full list of prize winners is as follows:
All the winning entries can be read in full at the Manga Jiman Winners’ Exhibition which is on at the Embassy of Japan until 25 February, and again from 2 to 6 March. Pages from all of the entries that were received as part of the 2019 contest will also be digitally displayed and our MANGA WALL shows original characters sketched by the artists at the winners’ reception.
