MANGA JIMAN COMPETITION 2019

2019/6/14

The Embassy of Japan’s search for the best of UK manga creating talent is back with the 13th edition of the MANGA JIMAN COMPETITION!

Against the backdrop of major exhibitions on manga happening across the UK, the ongoing Japan UK-Season of Culture, and the upcoming Rugby World Cup and Olympic and Paralympic games in Japan, this year we want entrants to reference the theme of ‘union’ in their entry. How the theme is interpreted is down to you, but it must be a visual, thematic or written reference, and please state how your entry relates to the theme on your entry form (please see below).
The competition has two categories; Yonkoma Manga, a comic strip of 4 panels on one page with a fixed structure, for entrants aged between 11 and 13 and Manga Jiman, a short story told across 6 to 8 pages for anyone aged 14 or over.

Winners and runners-up will receive fantastic prizes and have their artwork displayed in a special exhibition at the Embassy of Japan in 2020.

Judges are on the lookout for: artistic ability, original style, smart storytelling, thoughtful layout, and the incorporation of the theme in to the work. Every year the chosen shortlisted entries display a wide variety of artistic and narrative styles which reflects the diversity of manga/comic creating in this country. A selection of recent winning entries can be found here.
