JET Alumni Association (JETAA)

The JET Programme Alumni Association (JETAA) is the Alumni Association created in 1989 to strengthen and maintain the bonds of friendship developed between JET Programme participants. It currently has over 50 chapters throughout the world, and over 70,000 members.

JETAAUK is a collective of ex-JET Programme participants & anyone interested in Japan. They promote professional, cultural, educational, and social events and news to strengthen Anglo-Japan relations on a personal level. They are a voluntary organisation that provides a network for the alumni of the Programme. They help promote the programme and its aims and continue to further the case of Anglo-Japanese relations in the United Kingdom. JETAAUK is run by a national committee that coordinates efforts of individual local chapters and is dependent on the continuing support of the Embassy of Japan in London and the Japan Local Government Centre.

JETAAUK are a fantastic group of people who assist JET Alumni in navigating their lives post-JET; from formal careers fairs to regional events, language study to Japan-related jobs and connections, it as a great way to advance your interests and promote Anglo-Japanese relations or just reminisce about your time on Japan! Employment Verification

JET Programme Participants are employed directly by their Contracting Organisations and are not employees of the JET Programme, UK JET Programme Office, CLAIR, or MOFA. The UK JET Programme Office operates as a recruitment, promotional, organisational and orientation hub for UK Participants but does not have access to information relating to the specific employment of its Participants. As such, we are unable to provide letters of recommendation, or character references.

Letters of Recommendation and Character References

As Participants are directly employed by their Contracting Organisation, they should speak with their Supervisor, Principal, Teacher or a person within the Contracting Organisation from their time on the Programme to request a reference from them. Keep in mind that writing a letter of reference is not common in Japan and that your former Contracting Organisation might need some guidance as to what is appropriate. If there is a possibility that you may need a reference, or formal employment verification, it would be a good idea to keep in touch with former co-workers and administrators as they can routinely change workplaces.

Employment Verification

The UK JET Programme Office understands that Programme alumni may need to provide proof of their time on the Programme when they proceed with their careers. As such, we are able to provide a letter confirming your time on the Programme and your placement. Please be aware that this letter may not be suitable for some situations and is not a reference letter. In order to request this letter from us, please complete the form below and return it to us by email.

The UK JET Programme Office will not respond to emails directly from third parties requesting this information without alumni submitting an employment verification form beforehand.

For alumni that departed from Edinburgh, please contact the JET Programme at the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh using the same form in order to verify your participation.
