Proof of Degree

What do I need?

  • If you are a current final-year undergraduate student, you will need to provide an official, signed letter stating that you are due to graduate by August (see below).
  • If you are a current master's or PhD student, you will need to provide scans of (all) your previous study's degree certificates in addition to an official, signed letter from your university stating that you are due to graduate by August (see below).
  • If you are a graduate and not a current student, you will need to provide scans of all of your awarded degree's certificates.
Graduates and final-year students are required to provide a proof of degree document to show that they hold or will hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree (in any subject) by the designated date prior to departure.

For Graduates (non-students)

Please send a clear, legible scan of your Bachelor’s Degree certificate. Do not send the original, as we are not able to return documents.

In addition to your Bachelor's Degree certificate, you must submit any Master's or PhD certificates you have in order to be credited for them.

Where applicable, please also send clear, legible scans of any relevant postgraduate qualifications such as PGCE certificates otherwise they will not be credited in your application. We will also be able to accept scans of further certificates if they are relevant to your application (e.g. TEFL, TESOL, CELTA).

For Final-year Students

Please send a scan of an original letter indicating your projected date of graduation (this must include the day and cannot be later than 31st July). It must be the original and printed on university-headed paper including details of your enrolled course. It must also be signed by a person with authority to give such information (such as a departmental secretary, registrar, or personal tutor) and their contact details must be provided.

Please note that it is essential that you are able to prove whether you have or will have completed your degree before the departure date. We will be unable to process your application if you are not due to complete your degree until after departure.

Finalists who cannot graduate due to failure of modules will have any offers withdrawn and may be liable for cancellation fees if notice is only given within a month of departure.

The wording of this letter should be as follows:

To The JET Programme,

(First name, surname) is (expected/due) to (graduate/complete their BA/BSc course) on (date/month/year).

(Signature) (Stamp)

(Contact details)

Degree Result Letter (for final year students with a confirmed JET placement)

Successful candidates with confirmed placements will need to provide a Degree Result Letter to indicate that they have completed their course and have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree.

If a degree certificate has been issued, candidates will need to send the UK JET Office a scan of the certificate. However, most final year students will receive their Degree Certificate at a later date (sometimes after arrival in Japan). In this case, candidates must submit a Degree Result Letter. Please note that this letter is different to the Proof of Degree Letter submitted in the initial application process.

Finalists who cannot graduate due to failure of modules will have any offers withdrawn and may be liable for cancellation fees if notice is only given within a month of departure.

The wording of this letter should be as follows:

To The JET Programme,

(First name, surname) has successfully completed (course) on (completion date) and has been awarded (degree award). (First name, surname) will (graduate from their BA/BSc course) on (date/month/year).
