Message from Japan Information and Cultural Centre (JICC)

2020/5/19

Update on the current situation

Due to the ongoing situation surrounding Covid-19, also known as novel coronavirus, the Japan Information and Cultural Centre (JICC) library and foyer gallery are closed to the public, and film shows and events are suspended until further notice. The lending of artefacts and DVDs, as well as Club Taishikan workshops are also temporarily suspended.

We continue working remotely where possible to convey information and culture of Japan to you, and are available to answer enquiries via email at info@ld.mofa.go.jp. Don`t forget you can also follow the Embassy of Japan in the UK on Facebook and Twitter.

The Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020 continues with various events and seminars having been moved online. The calendar is updated as soon as we have news about scheduled events, but please check with the organisers directly for the latest information.

Online resources for Japan information and Japanese study

During this time we would like to draw your attention to the many online resources available for learning about Japan, Japanese language and culture.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs website Web Japan and Kids Web Japan provide a wide range of information about Japan, from traditional culture to new trends, science and technology, as well as pop culture. Kids Web in particular provides fun content to help children learn about Japan with many activity suggestions. The site is widely used in classrooms around the world.

Also available on the website are a selection of video clips on Japan - Japan Video Topics, and a back catalogue of niponica magazine which introduce various aspects of Japan.

For Japanese language learning, Japan Foundation has an online learning platform called JF Japanese e-Learning Minato. It provides an opportunity to study Japanese people all over the world who may wish to begin learning, but cannot attend an actual Japanese language school.

The main course of Minato is the Marugoto Plus, which is recommend for those who wish to comprehensively learn about the Japanese language and culture. Users can learn about Japanese language and culture alongside the contents of "Marugoto: Japanese language and culture", a coursebook which uses the JF Standard as a basis. Users can practice "real-life" Japanese while watching videos that help deepen understanding of actual everyday situations.

We hope you find these resources useful and look forward to sharing more about Japan with you in the future.
