With the summer months in full swing, there have been several Japanese festivals held around the UK. At the end of July, the Japanese Summer Matsuri Festival was held in Tatton Park, Knutsford, in association with the Japan Society Northwest, JETAANW, UCLAN and the Embassy. Guests could watch demonstrations of tea ceremony and iaido, performances of taiko drumming, koto playing and enka singing, and take part in traditional art & craft activities such as calligraphy, origami, and kamishibai. Earlier this month, a Japanese Garden Community Day was held in the Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park, with similar activities and performances for guests to enjoy. In other news from the JICC, this year's Manga Jiman Competition launched on Friday 11 August! The theme for this year's entries is FORWARD. This year, the 17th year of the competition, there are again 3 categories which can be entered, Manga Jiman, Yonkoma Youth and Yonkoma 14+. For more details about how to apply, check here.

The Embassy is also currently looking for candidates for this year's MIRAI Programme - a short-term youth exchange scheme set up to invite graduate and undergraduate students to Japan. This year there are two types of programmes; an in person visit to Japan and an online visit to Japan. For eligibility and further details on the programme and how to apply, check here. The deadline for applications is 11 September 2023.

Lastly, we are delighted to announce that JAPAN MATSURI - London's biggest celebration of Japanese culture - returns after four years to Trafalgar Square on Sunday 1 October! Save the date! More details to be announced in due course. Keep an eye on the official website here.

Some current highlights from the calendar include, the official stage production of Makoto Shinkai's anime film The Garden of Words at London's Park Theatre, which runs until 10 September. The production is by Whole Hog Theatre, a company established by former Daiwa Scholar, Alexandra Rutter, and features many British-Japanese actors as part of the company's ongoing efforts to create cross-cultural, collaborative works in both Japan and the UK. Until 3 September, Japan House London is holding a series of free family-friendly activity workshops where participants can enjoy exploring the cultures of Japan and unleashing their creativity while trying an activity using original Japan House London worksheets. For more details check here. WAVE: Currents in Japanese Graphic Arts also continues until 22 October at Japan House London. Featuring the work of a selection of 60 Japanese artists, explore the vibrant diversity of Japanese graphic arts in this bold exhibition which bridges the worlds of fine art, commercial illustration and counterculture.
