2025/6/30

This year marks the 80th year since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To further strengthen efforts to share the reality of the damage caused by atomic bombings with the world, Ms Teruko Yahata and Mr Kunihiko Iida, hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bombing) from Hiroshima who were appointed “Special Communicators for a World without Nuclear Weapons” by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the UK. 2025 JET Programme participants gathered at the Embassy this month for a Pre-Departure Reception. This summer, some 170 JET participants will depart for Japan, where they will work as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) in schools or as Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs) in local governments throughout the country. Ambassador Suzuki's Activities


From 28 to 30 May, Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki visited Scotland, where he held meetings with Alison Johnston MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, The Rt Hon John Swinney MSP, First Minister of Scotland, and Councilor Robert Aldridge, The Rt Hon Lord Provost of Edinburgh. He also attended a meeting of the Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Japan.
In addition, Ambassador Suzuki attended a dinner hosted by the First Minister together with representatives of several Japanese companies active in Scotland. He also visited the University of Edinburgh, Shin-Etsu Handotai Europe, the Suntory Auchentoshan Distillery and the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. Read more about the visit here.
This month Ambassador Suzuki had meetings with Baroness Gustafsson of Chesterton CBE, Minister of State (Minister for Investment) and with DBT Permanent Secretary Gareth Davies.
Earlier in the month, on 7 June, Ambassador and Madame Suzuki attended The Derby at Epsom Downs Racecourse, and on 20 June, Ambassador attended the second FT Nikkei UK Ekiden held along the Thames Path between Windsor and Reading.
