Applying for a Japanese passport

Application

In principle, applications must be made at the Embassy in person, but if you are unable to come to the Embassy, the application may be made by proxy. In this case, the application form should already be signed by the applicant and the proxy must bring their own photo ID.

Collection

The applicant must visit the Embassy to collect their passport. This includes infants and new-borns.
Any valid Japanese passport already held must be brought to the Embassy on collection.
If a passport applicant does not collect the passport within 6 months from the date of issue, the passport will be declared void. Any new passport application submitted within 5 years from the date the initial passport was declared void shall be subject to an increased issuance fee. However, the increased fee only applies where the initial passport application was submitted on or after 27 March 2023.

Processing Time

It takes 3 - 4 weeks to issue a passport.

Applicants under 18 years of age

If you are under 18 years old, a signature from a legal representative (eg. one of your parents) is required on the second page of the application form. If your legal representative cannot write on the application form, you can use the letter of consent and submit it with the application form.
